Acupuncture is a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is gaining popularity in North America because of its successful treatment of a wide variety of conditions. Acupuncture promotes your body’s ability to heal itself. It can strengthen recuperative power and boost immunity, balance physical and emotional health, and improve overall body function and well-being. It is a safe, painless and effective medicine to treat a wide variety of medical problems. Practitioners of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine have used this non-invasive treatment method to help millions of people become well and stay well.

What is Qi? ( pronounced "chee")
At the heart of this ancient medicine is the philosophy of Qi ( pronounced “chee”) or Life Energy, flows throughout the body. Qi gives life to the body and protects it from invasion (bacteria/virus), illness, pain and disease. A person’s health is influenced by the quality, quantity and balance of Qi.

How does Qi move?
Qi flows through specific pathways called meridians. There are 14 main meridians which connect to internal meridian pathways which link to specific organs and glands. Meridian pathways are like rivers flowing inside the body. Where a river flows, it transports life-giving water that provides nourishment to the land, plants and people. An obstruction to the flow of Qi is like a dam. When Qi becomes backed up in one part of the body, the flow becomes restricted in other parts. This blockage of the flow of Qi can be detrimental to a person’s health, cutting off vital nourishment to the body, organs and glands.

How is Qi flow disrupted?
Lack of exercise, overexertion, eating a poor diet, overeating, physical trauma, emotional trauma, seasonal changes, stress, quantity and quality of qi can all contribute to the improper flow of Qi. Normally when a blockage or imbalance occurs, the body easily bounces back, returning to a state of health and well-being. However, when this disruption is prolonged or excessive, or if the body is in a weakened state, illness, pain or disease can set in and become chronic.

What does an Acupuncturist do?
Initially, each patient is taken through an extensive initial exam including a full health history. Questions are asked regarding the health, symptoms and lifestyle. We gather this information to effectively diagnose the patient based on the individual. We look for imbalances of Qi which may have contributed to a person’s health problems.

An acupuncturist will place fine, sterile needles at specific acu-points along the meridians This safe and painless insertion of the needles can unblock the obstruction and balance Qi where it has become unbalanced. Once this is done, Qi can feely circulate throughout the body, providing adequate nourishment to cells, organs, glands, tissues, and muscles. This can eliminate pain and restore balance and harmony, as well as the body’s ability to heal itself—ultimately leading to optimal health and well-being.

My Education

I started my education at the Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine and finished my education at the Institute of Traditional Medicine. Both Schools are located in Toronto, Ontario. My studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine has been taught by a collective of teachers from China and North America including Dr. Kaleb Montgomery, Amanda Liu, Annie Zhu, Mona Bolton, and Robert Helmer. My studies included over 3400 hours of in school class instruction and practical application.

Why I chose to Practice Traditional Chinese Medicine

From a very young age, I had some health problems which set me back from living my life they way I wanted to. I was constantly on anti-biotics felt sick all the time, experienced severe ear problems with loss of hearing, and skin issues. I decided I would take my health into my own hands and started to research about health, how the body works, nutrition and chemicals. My first encounter with Chinese Medicine was with a Naturopathic doctor in London Ontario, which benefited my mind, physical body and spirit. At the same time I focused on my diet and eating regimen and saw great progress in my overall health and elimination of unwanted emotional and physical symptoms. I decided that I wanted health care to be my career path and I chose Traditional Chinese Medicine to be my focus. I felt drawn to Chinese Medicine because after experiencing, researching it, and living it, I knew that it was the right medicine for me to use to help others. ( and myself)

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting ultra fine needles into specific points of energy that are located along 14 Meridians or Channels that cover the entire body. There are 365 classical Acupuncture points associated with the 14 Meridians and several dozen ‘extra’ points that are not associated with any particular meridians. The points and meridians, mapped out over the last several thousand years have shown that competent practitioners insertion and manipulation of specific acupuncture points will produce predictable results in the body.

For more information, please download our Free E-book about Chinese Medicine and How it all works!

Are acupuncture needle safe?

This is a common question, and the answer is Yes! We use needles only once, and then they are disposed of. Needles are single use, sterilized, high quality stainless steel and safe. We follow specific acupuncture guidelines outlined the Clean Needle Technique, and followed by such jurisdictions as California and British Columbia.

How often do I need Acupuncture?

Treatment time and frequency depends on many factures such as the nature and severity of the health concern, how long you have had it, your age, your general health and your lifestyle. Treatment success will depend on how much you are willing to take action on advice you are given. Are you ready to change your habits? Since each person is unique, the number of treatments required will vary. Following your Initial Diagnosis, we will have a clearer picture of how many treatments we think will be necessary and will be outlined in your Review of Findings Package.

In China acupuncture is administered in courses of 7-10 daily treatments, then there’s a break of several days, then another 7-10 day course, and so on until the problem is cured. This kind of treatment schedule is usually not convenient or practical for Western people though. Usually acupuncturists advise between 1-3 treatments per week, which is still effective but treatment time may be longer. To enhance Acupuncture treatments we prescribe Chinese herbal medicine.

Also as TCM views each of us as a unique individual, people with the same complaint will most likely receive entirely different treatment and will respond to it differently. Your acupuncturist will best be able to tell you how many treatments you need after he/she has diagnosed your particular problem according to TCM principles.

Should I stop other medications?

No. You should continue to follow your current physician’s instructions. Please remember that acupuncture is used to complement and supplement your physician’s treatments not to replace them. You should discuss this issue with your physician and acupuncturist.

You may find your medication working more efficiently since Acupuncture has a tendency to remove blockages and balance the energetic pathways. If your medication is dosage sensitive, make sure you see your Doctor to monitor your dosages. Make sure you know what the signs of overdosing are, if any. It is never a good idea to stop taking medication without your Doctor’s guidance. Western pharmaceuticals are potent. In many cases you need to reduce dosages gradually to avoid unnecessary reactions.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are metallic, solid, and hair-thin. People experience acupuncture differently, but most feel no or minimal pain as the needles are inserted. Some people are energized by treatment, while others feel relaxed. Improper needle placement, movement of the patient, or a defect in the needle can cause soreness and pain during treatment. This is why it is important to seek treatment from a qualified acupuncture practitioner.

Generally speaking, Acupuncture should not be painful. When your practitioner inserts a needle, he looks for signs that Qi has arrived by any one of a number of signs. You may feel a dull ache, perhaps a feeling of electricity or tingling, a sensation of heat or cold, or it may just feel strange. Sometimes you can feel Qi running up or down the body or a limb. It is important that the sensation of Qi be felt. Occasionally you may feel like you’ve been stung by a bee. This can be somewhat uncomfortable, but should pass almost immediately. If it doesn’t, tell your practitioner right away so he can adjust or remove the needle. Occasionally you may feel a throbbing ache, which may also be somewhat uncomfortable, especially if you are being treated for a chronic condition. At no time, though, should you have any sensation that is beyond your tolerance level. If you do, let your practitioner know right away. The fact is that the vast majority of clients report that, after a while, they begin to feel a real sense of well-being, almost euphoria.
Is acupuncture safe?

Relatively few complications from the use of acupuncture have been reported in light of the millions of people treated each year and the number of acupuncture needles used. Still, complications have resulted from inadequate sterilization of needles and from improper delivery of treatments. If you receive acupuncture from a skilled practitioner, it is perfectly safe. However, there are some things to be aware of since we are using needles. Cautions are recommended when working around major organs or around the face. It is possible to puncture a Lung (Pneumothorax), if one is not careful. The practitioner inserts needles around the Lungs at an angle, uses shorter needles and avoids deep penetration especially in elderly and slender clients.Practitioners must use a new set of disposable needles taken from a sealed package for each patient and should swab treatment sites with alcohol or another disinfectant before inserting needles. Needling particularly sensitive parts of the body such as the scrotum, vulva, anus, the navel, nipples, and eyeballs is strictly forbidden. Once needles are inserted, you should try to lie still and not make any large movements, especially if you have needles in your back or chest.

I have heard that Acupuncture is good for pain. Is it good for anything else?

According to the World Health Organization the following ailments and conditions generally respond well to acupuncture:

Acute muscle strains

Acute joint sprains

Acute & chronic neck & back pain

Headache

Irregular menstruation, painful menstruation

Constipation & diarrhea

Indigestion

Impotence

Post-stroke paralysis

Addictions – overeating, smoking & drug dependence

This is not a definitive list though – there are many other acupuncture benefits and some acupuncturists specialize in and obtain very good results treating disorders like acne, asthma and depression.

Acupuncture is a complete medical system in itself, and is also an excellent compliment to almost any other treatment, including Western pharmaceuticals & surgery, herbal therapies, massage or Chiropractic. The full list of diseases and conditions for which Acupuncture would be an appropriate treatment is extensive. Acupuncture is extremely effective, drug free, non-surgical treatment for the serious side effects of Cancer treatments and hormone replacement therapies for Autoimmune Diseases, post-operative pain, PMS and Menopause symptoms.. Acupuncture is good for balancing the body’s systems and promoting reduced stress, good health and well-being. It is particularly effective at treating emotional disorders such as phobias, grief, anger and fear.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM):

A group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered an integral part of conventional medicine. Complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine, and alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. Some health care providers practice both CAM and conventional medicine.

Conventional medicine:

A whole medical system practiced by holders of M.D. (medical doctor) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathy) degrees and by their allied health professionals, such as physical therapists, psychologists, and registered nurses. Other terms for conventional medicine include allopathy; Western, mainstream, and orthodox medicine; and biomedicine.

Fibromyalgia:

A complex chronic condition having multiple symptoms, including muscle pain, fatigue, and tenderness in precise, localized areas, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips. People with this syndrome may also experience sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and other symptoms.

Meridian:

A traditional Chinese medicine term for each of the 20 pathways throughout the body for the flow of qi, or vital energy, accessed through acupuncture points.

Preclinical study:

A study done to obtain information about a treatment’s safety and side effects when given at different doses to animals or to cells grown in the laboratory.

Placebo:

An inactive pill or sham procedure given to a participant in a research study as part of a test of the effects of another substance or treatment. Scientists use placebos to get a true picture of how the substance or treatment under investigation affects participants. In recent years, the definition of placebo has been expanded to include such things as aspects of interactions between patients and their health care providers that may affect their expectations and the study’s outcomes.

Qi:

A Chinese term for vital energy or life force. In traditional Chinese medicine, qi (pronounced “chee”) is believed to regulate a person’s spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance, and to be influenced by the opposing forces of yin and yang.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM):

A whole medical system that was documented in China by the 3rd century B.C. TCM is based on a concept of vital energy, or qi, that is believed to flow throughout the body. It is proposed to regulate a person’s spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance and to be influenced by the opposing forces of yin (negative energy) and yang (positive energy). Disease is proposed to result from the flow of qi being disrupted and yin and yang becoming unbalanced. Among the components of TCM are herbal and nutritional therapy, restorative physical exercises, meditation, acupuncture, and remedial massage.

In Chinese Medicine it isn’t even considered a massage, its not in the same category. It is so great because it works to get the Qi or energy to flow in your body. When your muscles are sore or achy, tight or tingling, it means that the energy is blocked. Tuina is a superstar for unblocking the energy and making your muscles burst out with joy.

For those that like massages to be soft and relaxing, tuina can do this for you too. It is best for people who want to go deep and release all the stagnation in their body. We all have stagnation or blockages, any pain is blockage. You may not feel it on a daily basis, but if we start to palpate or push into your body, there will be sore points, I guarantee it. Tuina works on various levels and when combined with Acupuncture, the results and even better. We work deep and thorough to get to the core reason why your muscles ( or any other tissue such as tendons or bones) are hurting.

Tuina massage is not only for pain. We can use it for the same reasons we use acupuncture, digestive, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary concerns. ( among others) We regulate the energy flow and therefore the entire body including all internal organs and tissues receive the necessary environement to perform their jobs. It all comes down to blood flow, when there is blockages in our body, the blood cannot reach all the cells to deliver glucose and other materials. It is very common for people to complain about cold hands and feet. For the cold hands nine times out of ten the patients chest, shoulders, upper arms and forearms all have very tight muscles. This tightness ensures that blood flow is hindered to the arm. Removing this tightness is necessary so that all the tissues get the proper nourishment. This nourishment is Qi. (chee)

The techniques of Tuina help move energy in the body, but in essence it is motivating the lymphatic system to help flush toxins from every cell in the body. The lympathic system is responsible for removing wastes from your cells. When it becomes backed up, so does everything else

Tui na is a hands-on body treatment that uses Chinese taoist and martial art principles to bring the body to balance. The principles being balanced are the eight principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The practitioner may brush, knead, roll/press and rub the areas between each of the joints (known as the eight gates) to open the body’s defensive (wei) chi and get the energy moving in both the meridians and the muscles. The practitioner can then use range of motion, traction, massage, with the stimulation of acupressure points to treat both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, as well as many non-musculoskeletal conditions. Tui na is an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is taught in TCM schools as part of formal training in Oriental medicine. Many East Asian martial arts schools also teach tui na to their advanced students for the treatment and management of injury and pain due to training.

The skin and superficial muscle layers are drawn into and held inside the cup. The cup may be moved while the cup is suctioned onto the skin by applying some oil before the cup is placed. The movement causes a regional pulling of the skin and muscle. This technique is called gliding cupping. This treatment has some relation to certain massage techniques s uch as the rapid skin picking along the back that is an important aspect of tuina massage.

Cupping is applied by acupuncturists to certain acupuncture points, as well as to regions of the body that are affected by pain ( where the pain is deeper than the tissue being pulled). View all the conditions cupping helps by clicking here.

When the cups are placed on the surface of the skin, the treatment is somewhat like gua-sha. Cupping is gentler than gua-sha. Cupping has some effect like moxibustion, because the cups are heated. Heating of the cups was the method used to obtain suction, the hot air in the cups has a low density and, as the cups cool with the opening sealed by the skin, the pressure within the cups declines, sucking the skin into it. In this case, the cups are hot and have a stimulating effect something like that of burning moxa wool.

History of Cupping
The earliest use of cupping that is recorded is from the famous Taoist alchemist and herbalist Ge Hong, (281-341AD). The method was described in his book A Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies, in which the cups were actually animal horns, used for draining pustules. As a result of using horns, cupping has been knows as jiaofa or the horn technique. In the Tang Dynasty book, Necessities of a Frontier Official, cupping was prescribed for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis ( or similar disorder). More recently, Zhao Xuemin, during the Qing Dynasty used it for alleviating headache, dizziness, abdominal distention, pain syndromes. He used pottery and bamboo cups.

Modern Cupping
During the 20th century, glass cups were developed which made things a lot easier. Bamboo and Pottery easily broke or became too hot, or caught on fire. Sometimes drinking glasses were used, but thicker glass cups are the best. A small amount of fire is placed underneath the cup to create a suctioning effect on the skin.
Generally the cups are left for about 10 minutes, an average of 5-15 minutes. The skin becomes reddened due to the suction. The cup is removed by pressing the skin along its side to allow outside are to leak into it. Movement of the cups is limited to fleshy areas.

Today we recommend it for the treatment of pain, gastro-intestinal disorders, lung diseases ( especially chronic cough and asthma), and paralysis, although it can be used for other conditions as well. It also feels amazing just for stress relief.

Contraindications
Contraindications include areas of skin which are inflamed, high fever, convulsions or cramping, easy bleeding, or abdominal or lower back during pregnancy.

We stress the importance of Chinese Herbs, because you take the medicine ( usually in the form of a tea) everyday, which ensures that you are getting treatment on a daily basis. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy when combined provide the best results.

How it Works!

1. An initial diagnosis is always necessary especially with herbal medicine. This process takes about 1 – 1.5 hours. It helps us gather and record all the necessary details regarding you. The more thorough, the more effective the medicine will be.

2. After the initial diagnosis, we prescribe a formula of herbs based on what patterns or dis-harmonies the practitioner diagnoses. The amount of herbs varies from patient to patient, but it is typically about 100-125g per day of herbs consisting of about 8-15 different types of herbs.

3. Herbs are prescribed Raw or in Granular form. See the comparison Chart.

4. If you choose Raw Herbs, you need to cook them every 2 days. See Cooking Instructions

5. On average it costs about $4-7/ day for herbal medicine. It is usually about $5/day. Larger formulas will cost more. If very expensive ingredients are used, there may be extra charges.

6. For Acute or Recent problems, the time needed to resolve your health concern will be less than a chronic problem. If you have had a problem for 10 years, it will take many months or longer to resolve the problem. Some people react faster than others. Typcially you want to take them for 3-6 months. You will see progress along the way.

7. Some herbs do not have a great taste, but they work well. At the beginning as the body gets used to it, the taste may not be to everyone’s liking, but by the fourth day, it is more tolerable. Many patients say they enjoy the taste. The most important part is getting results.

Female
3) Age 40
4) Why did you seek treatment? To enhance IVF fertility treatments
5) What did you enjoy about your treatments? Relaxing, attention to my personal history, taking the time to see how I’m doing overall, the crystal bed felt awesome…
6) How was your overall experience with the treatments? Excellent! I got the results I needed! Here’s what I wrote in Yelp:

I believe that I am pregnant right now thanks to a combination of many factors, but one of those factors that was key was the acupuncture treatments from Jason at THC.

Back story:
DH and I were TTC for about 8 years. Issues that came up included stuff like: fibroids, gluten intolerance, vit D deficiency, Hypothyroidism (hashimotos’), Electromagnetic fields, Genetic incompatibility with veganism, stress and a large list of other stuff. Like I said: it was 8 years!!!
We were at our 3rd fertility clinic by this time and they sat us down and said to me (and my hubby, but it was about me only): “well: you are now 40 years old, your BMI means you are obese and you have an AMH level that is really low (meaning low ovarian reserve usually). If you have IVF, it probably won’t work.”

I was devastated.
After a bit of discussion with my hubby: we knew we still had to try IVF because we had come so far and we just had to.
So, we set out to maximize our chances. Hubby worked on perfecting his vitamin levels with supplements (zinc and EFA’s especially) and I started Acupuncture. We knew that it would take at least 3 months for any changes due to acupuncture to kick in, so we planned to have the IVF 3 months from that time.

Jason helped me many ways:
He/acupuncture helped me lose a bit of weight. As a large person it seems I’ve been trying to lose weight always. So this was great! And it has been proven to help with fertility.
I also believe that I was calmer as a result of acupuncture.
I needed to have a boost to my egg production and make my ovaries strong and eggy. I believe the acupuncture I got at THC was responsible for increasing my egg production.
I also would wager that my hormones were balanced via acupuncture.
I would highly recommend Jason/Traditional Healing Center for this type of treatment based on my successful results.

Here are the results of the IVF treatment:
I had 10 follicles that resulted in 4 eggs. 3 of those eggs were mature enough to be fertilized. Of those 3, 2 became fertilized and divided. They were transferred back to me and one managed to hang on!
I am absolutely delighted to say I’m 10 weeks pregnant as of Aug 3!
The money we invested in IVF was huge. We were so tight for money! But I am so glad we invested what was comparably a tiny amount in Acupuncture treatments at THC because it clearly made a difference in the outcome.

7) Would you recommend this treatment for others? Already have!
Have these treatments improved you life in any way? Yes: I’m pregnant!
9) Please list any other comments you would like to add. After the baby is born, I am hopeful Jason can help me again with weight loss.

Female
Age: 61
Occupation: Yoga Teacher

Why did you seek treatment?
- to hopefully get more range of motion in my right shoulder after having a frozen shoulder a few years ago
- to find out how I’m doing through a thorough overall assessment
- to get rid of or reduce my: hot flashes, waking up throughout the night, coughing & blowing my nose every morning

What did you enjoy about your treatments?
- Jason makes me feel very at ease
- Jason explains everything clearly and answers my questions
- the low music and lights off during the acupuncture session are relaxing
- Jason answers his emails

How was your overall experience with the treatments? (please explain)
- I got more range of motion in my shoulder
- I cough less at night
- I blow my nose less frequently
- I still wake up throughout the night, but not every night
- My hot flashes are less frequent and less intense

Would you recommend this treatment for others?
- absolutely, without hesitation

Have these treatments improved your life in any way?
(if yes, please explain)
- now that my shoulder is better, I can practice my yoga more deeply and demonstrate the postures I couldn’t before (due to my shoulder) to my students

Please list any other comments you would like to add.
- I really enjoy chatting with Jason – he has a wealth of knowledge he shares so easily

———————————————————————————————————-

In 2005, i was involved in a multi-trauma vehicle accident. Like most trauma patients, my injuries were complex and slow to heal.

Given my background as a physiotherapist, I was familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine and its effectiveness in the treatment of Orthopaedic injuries.

In November of 2009, I began to attend The Traditional Healing Centre as Jason Tarter’s patient. Jason presented as a very caring, compassionate and knowlegable practitioner. His dedication and expertise are surpassed only by his high level of skill and attention.

My treatments with Jason consisted of several adjunctive techniques such as acupuncture, tuina, gua-sha, herbal medicine, moxibustion, cupping and diatetics.

To date, I have been attending the Traditional Healing Centre, regularly for over a year and there is little doubt in my mind as to the efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. All the modalities combined have contributed to my ongoing successful recovery.

Nadine C.

———————————————————————————————————-

I see Jason at the Traditional Healing Centre for a variety of reasons: dry eyes, irregular menstrual cycles, feeling worn out, ability to cope with stress from time to time, and strengthening my immunity to name a few. Usually I get a combination of massage, acupuncture and sound healing, but find that the sound healing is like nothing I’ve experienced before. The soothing vibrations send me to sleep in minutes, and feeling recharged not only immediately after but in the days/weeks to come. Natasha N.

———————————————————————————————————-

“I came to see Jason for acne that I have struggled with for more than 10 years. It took a little bit of patience but the results I got where more than I had expected. Not only did my skin clear up and look more vibrant, I also felt my overall health improve. I have tried many approaches over the years for my acne and this is by far the most effective. I am extremely happy with my results! Jason is very professional, knowledgeable, and caring towards this patients. He is always willing to educate his patients and answer any questions. I highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a more natural approach to their health problems. It works!” Vicki C.

I had surgury on my left knee when I was 16 because my knee dislocated repeatedly. I hadn’t had any problems with it for over 10 years, until recently. This past winter I slipped on black ice and dislocated my left knee. I decided to try accupuncture in conjunction with physiotherapy. I went for 6 sessions over 6 weeks and the results were remarkable. I noticed my knee improving in strength and mobility as the weeks of treatment progressed. I wish I had known about accupuncture when I had the surgury as a teen, because I’m sure it would have facilitated my recovery much more than just using physiotherapy. Jason is a professional and approachable practitioner. He is very knowledgeable and explains treatments in a way that put me at ease, since I had never tried accupuncture before. I recommend Jason’s treatments for all phyical and energetic healing work. Michelle

I received my first sound healing treatment from Jason and immediately after I felt more relaxed and grounded. It was as if something had opened up for me on a more energetic level. Ever since the treatment I have had more energy and seem to have a overall improved sense of well being. Thanks Jason! Melysa G
