There are different types of Acupuncture, but the real one is from a person trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This involves thousands of hours of training. When it comes to your health, there is no substitute for proper care.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into specific parts of the body below the dermis (skin). Yes that’s it. But selecting the right point is the most important part. It’s very easy to learn Acupuncture, but its very difficult to know where to put the actual needles. There is more to acupuncture that meets the eye.
Local Treatments
It is easy to think that if you have back pain, putting needles in the back is the way to get the results you want. This is usually far from the actual truth, as back pain could be happening for a number of reasons. For instance, while treating back pain with acupuncture, I tend not to put any needles in the back for most treatments because I find I get better results with distal points ( far away from the back). Many practitioner therapists out there may do more local treatments

It may depend on what you are treating with the acupuncture. A Common cold or sore throat you may only need a couple treatments close together.
