Acupuncture for Male Fertility
When a couple has trouble conceiving, a male factor often plays a part. Chinese medicine looks at a man's general and reproductive health as a pattern, and treatment can support it alongside your doctor's or fertility clinic's care.

Common symptoms
- Trying to conceive with your partner for a year or more (six months if she is over 35)
- A semen analysis showing low count, low motility or abnormal shape
- Low sex drive or erection problems
- Tiredness, poor sleep and high stress while trying to conceive
- Pain, swelling or a lump in the testicles
Common causes
- Varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum)
- Hormone problems, including low testosterone or thyroid disease
- Past infections, mumps, or surgery in the groin
- Smoking, heavy drinking, cannabis, anabolic steroids and testosterone supplements
- Heat exposure, obesity, and some medicines
How Chinese medicine understands male fertility
In Chinese medicine, the Kidneys are seen as the store of “Essence” (Jing), the deep reserve behind growth, reproduction and ageing. Sperm is thought of as an expression of that Essence. So male fertility is read first through the Kidneys, and then through whatever is blocking or draining them.
The common patterns are:
- Kidney Yang deficiency. Low energy, a cold feeling in the lower back and legs, low desire and frequent urination at night.
- Kidney Yin deficiency. Night sweats, a dry mouth, poor sleep and sometimes early ejaculation.
- Qi and Blood deficiency. General tiredness, a pale face and poor appetite, often after illness or long periods of overwork.
- Damp-heat in the lower body. Heaviness and sweating in the groin, sometimes urinary discomfort. Chinese medicine links it to alcohol, rich food and sitting for long hours.
- Liver Qi and Blood stagnation. Stress, a dragging ache in the groin, and sometimes a varicocele.
Most men have a mix. Building up a deficiency is different from clearing damp-heat, so the pattern decides the treatment.
What treatment involves
Treatment at the clinic in Keswick runs alongside the care of your family doctor, urologist or fertility clinic. The first visit includes a lot of questions: how long you have been trying, your semen analysis and blood tests, your sleep, stress, energy, digestion, alcohol, exercise and work. I look at your tongue and take your pulse.
Acupuncture is used to support your general health, sleep and energy, and to help with the stress that often builds while trying to conceive. Points are commonly on the lower belly, lower back, legs and arms, chosen for your pattern.
Chinese herbal medicine is often part of the plan: a formula written for your pattern and dispensed at the clinic. Tell your fertility clinic about any herbs you take. Do not buy fertility or “male enhancement” products online.
Plan on 5–10 treatments to judge how you are responding. Sperm take around three months to develop, so any changes on a semen test are judged by your doctor over months, not weeks. Research on acupuncture for male fertility is still developing. For your partner’s side, see the fertility support page.
Between visits
- Stop smoking, cut back on alcohol and avoid cannabis. Tell your doctor about any testosterone or steroid use; these can switch off sperm production.
- Keep the testicles cool. Avoid hot tubs and saunas, long hours with a laptop on your lap, and very tight underwear.
- Move every day and aim for a healthy weight.
- Eat well: vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts and fish. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking supplements.
- Look after your sleep and stress, for both of you.
When to see your doctor first
See your doctor first, or promptly if you are already coming in, if you have:
- A year of trying without a pregnancy, or six months if your partner is over 35. Both partners should be assessed.
- A lump, swelling or heaviness in a testicle.
- Pain in the testicles or groin, or blood in your semen or urine.
- Low sex drive, erection problems, or loss of body hair, which can point to a hormone problem.
- A history of undescended testicles, testicular surgery, cancer treatment or mumps.
Go to emergency for sudden, severe pain in a testicle.
Questions about male fertility
Will acupuncture help us get pregnant?
No one can promise that, and I won't. Acupuncture is not a way to raise your chances of conceiving. What Chinese medicine can do is assess your general health and treat the pattern it finds, as support alongside your doctor's or fertility clinic's care.
Do I need a semen analysis first?
Yes. A semen analysis is the basic test for male fertility, and it is arranged through your doctor or a fertility clinic. It shows whether there is a problem and gives your doctor a baseline. Bring the results if you have them.
My partner is already having fertility treatment. Should I come in too?
That is up to you both. Fertility is a couple's question, and the male partner's health matters too. Tell your fertility clinic about any acupuncture or herbs either of you is using. Your partner can read about women's treatment on the fertility support page.
